The Skeleton Twins (2014) ***

The Skeleton Twins (2014) ***

Part observation, part commentary, The Skeleton Twins follows that dysfunctional unit we like to call a family. More particularly, the film highlights a bond between two sibling who drifted apart years before, and suddenly find themselves together again.

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears is a nature documentary, directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey, and narrated by John C. Reilly. Soft around the edges, Bears avoids gruesome scenes that typically accompany movies about wildlife. The filmmakers manage to put together a decent narrated plot, following a family of grizzly bears – a mom and two young cubs, as they venture from their hibernation home onto an Alaskan spring, summer and fall.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2013, Sweden) ****

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2013, Sweden) ****

Think of this film as a Swedish adaptation of Forrest Gump. Here too we have a protagonist whose life-story spans events and generations, putting him in front of world leaders, scientists and rebels. I enjoyed it and recommend if you are looking for something zany and are overly critical.

The Drop (2014) ****

The Drop (2014) ****

The Drop, a crime drama directed by Michaël R. Roskam to a script by Dennis Lehane, is both familiar and fresh. There is a rough edge to The Drop that places it in a different category than other films in the genre. Recommended if you like the genre.
