Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) ***

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) ***

Kingsman is a spy-hero action-comedy, directed by Matthew Vaughn to a screenplay by Vaughn and Jane Goldman. I confess that when the Kingsman’s previews were playing at theaters, months prior to the movie’s release, I was skeptic as to seeing it. Though the coming attractions were amusing, I did not fathom I would much enjoy this production. Coming with very low expectations, Kingsman was a pleasant surprise. If you feel like tasting a summer movie regardless of the weather outside, Kingsman is a good choice.

Nightcrawler (2014) ****

Nightcrawler (2014) ****

Nightcrawler is a thriller written and directed by Dan Gilroy, staring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, and Bill Paxton. Nightcrawler tells the story of Lou Bloom, played by Gyllenhaal, a young person that seems to barely survive by stealing from construction sites scrap for sale. Discovering by chance a better way to make a living, Bloom turns to shooting video of news-worthy crime scenes, which he then sells to a TV station as a freelancer. Thus Bloom becomes a Paparazzi of crime.

Gone Girl (2014) ****

Gone Girl (2014) ****

Gone Girl is a crime mystery, directed by David Fincher to a screenplay written by Gillian Flynn, adapted from Flynn's 2012 novel of the same title. What I did appreciate about the film, beyond the decent story and the fine acting, is the commentary it makes about the condition of our society. Though perhapse nothing new, it still drives home the notion of scandal-greedy TV anchors, of people’s thirsty for contact with celebrities, even if those are murder suspects, and of the ease with which the media can maniplate public opinion. These, along with several other noteworthy topics, make Gone Girl an interesting film. Just be warned that a romantic date flick, this movie is not.

The Drop (2014) ****

The Drop (2014) ****

The Drop, a crime drama directed by Michaël R. Roskam to a script by Dennis Lehane, is both familiar and fresh. There is a rough edge to The Drop that places it in a different category than other films in the genre. Recommended if you like the genre.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a charming, fast-pace story, whose protagonist is a revered concierge named Monsieur Gustave H. With its white and pink decor, The Grand Budapest Hotel itself looks much like a tall fancy wedding cake, structures with layers over layers of, well, nothing of real substance, thus becoming a set metaphor for the story.
