Where Do We Go Now? (Lebanon, 2011) ***

All in all, the plot doesn’t hold the weight of the topic at hand, and the switching between laughs to tears with an occasional musical beat are just awkward. Still, kudos for the attempt.

Footnote (Israel, 2011) *****

A delightful drama that focuses on father-son relationship, Footnote’s story highlights egos and power struggles in an area so narrow most audiences wouldn’t be familiar with: Talmud (a collection of Jewish scriptures) Philology.

The Artist (France, 2011) *****

Simply delightful, The Artist rightfully deserves the highest praises for being an engaging, highly stylized, well-performed film. It intelligently pays tribute to Hollywood’s silent film era, at a time of transition to talkies.

Fist of Fury (Hong Kong AKA The Chinese Connection, and The Iron Hand in the USA, 1972) */*****

With a plot as thin as a rice-paper, this Bruce Lee film, has earned a rare one-star, but when it comes to the fighting scenes, its a shining five-star.

Kagemusha (Japan, 1980) ****

Kagemusha is an Akira Kurosawa period piece, that is in essence an extensive character study. It tells the story of a thief that happened to perfectly resemble a fearless warlord of Japan’s 1500’s.

The Hairdresser's Husband [Le Mari de la coiffeuse] (1990, France) ****

The Hairdresser's Husband is a bitter-sweet unpretentious romantic film. Without showing nudity it is also highly erotic, and with its Middle Eastern music somewhat exotic.
