Rush (2013) ***

Rush (2013) ***

Ron Howard is, no doubt, a capable director, and Rush, a biographical action film directed by Howard to a script by Peter Morgan, is, for the most part, an engaging movie. Yet this film, depicting the 1976 Formula One season, with the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda as its main focus, is missing a critical element - one central likable character.

Lee Daniels' The Butler (2013) ***

Lee Daniels' The Butler (2013) ***

Lee Daniels' The Butler is an uneven film. At over 2 hours long it feels its length. Furthermore, the pace at which the plot moves mirrors the slowness at which African-Americans won civil rights though several decades of the previous century. It is far from being satisfying as a cinematic experience. However, it does take us through a journey of the civil rights movement, a journey worth remembering.

42 (2013) ***

42 (2013) ***

Being that 42 is the inspirational story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, one would have expected the filmmaking to show some more courage and daring. Instead, watching 42 feels much like watching a Disney flick; despite some intense racial moments, it's all very sterilized to fit all audiences. Nevertheless, 42 remains a notable film because of its subject matter; a film I will likely show my kids as a lesson in history, equality and tolerance.

Downton Abbey (UK, 2010-2013) *****

Downton Abbey (UK, 2010-2013) *****

What makes Downton Abbey stand out, is a combination of excellent storyline -- writing that feels authentic yet fitted for our time, strong believable fictional characters that play against real historical events, delightful credible acting with a list of actors too long to mention, superb production design value, appealing musical score and much more. It scores high in every possible category of TV production. But even more so, Downton Abbey is both humanistic in its themes and characters, as well as answering a fascination many viewers have with the life of the aristocracy.

No (Chile, 2012) ****

No (Chile, 2012) ****

No covers about a month in 1988, during which Chile, under Pinochet, was subjected to an intense political advertising campaign. What makes No, the film, special, is its unique perspective. It follows a young promising advertising executive who guides the No campaign; a campaign organized by a coalition of the opposition parties. The plot further thrusts this character, René, played by the mesmerizing Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, against various opposing powers, including his own agency's boss, his ex-wife, members of his own campaign and, of course, the Pinochet administration of terror. If you are interested in good intense drama, based on historical events, say Yes to No.

Lincoln (2012) ****

Focusing on the final four months of Lincoln's life, including the ending of slavery (Thirteenth Amendment) and the Union victory in the Civil War, Lincoln provides an engaging biopic that is a shining portrait of a leader standing tall in American history.
