Silver Linings Playbook (2012) ****

Silver Linings PlaybookDo bipolars attract? Silver Linings Playbook is, in itself, a bit of a bipolar movie. Two hours long, its first 60 minutes are over the top and somewhat tiresome, while its final 60 minutes show a heart. It is only when filmmaker David O. Russell, who also wrote the screenplay, adapted from a novel of the same name by Matthew Quick, stops trying so hard to make it a film about a mental illness and, instead, starts focusing on the people behind the disorder, that the film wins you over. The plot merges a dysfunctional family, a broken marriage, mental health, dancing and NFL football, into a compelling all-American story. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence lead a capable cast that includes also a terrific Robert De Niro, though it is, no doubt, Lawrence that steals the show. Past the first half of the film Russell shows a good sense of timing in his direction. I, personally, doubt bipolar attraction can last but in the movies it’s all possible... Rating this film was challenging given its unevenness but all in all it’s a worthy movie to see on the big screen thus it gets 4 stars.
