Painted Lady (1997) ****

Painted Lady is a British murder mystery mini-series, directed by Julian Jarrold to a screenplay by Allan Cubitt. It stars Helen Mirren in the main role, with supporting cast that includes Iain Glen, Franco Nero, Michael Maloney, Lesley Manville and Barry Barnes.
The story focuses on the character of Maggie Sheridan, a 1960's singer who no longer performs and is comfortably residing at a small cottage on an estate belonging to Sir Charles Stafford, the father of her childhood’s friend. When her patron is murdered during a robbery attempt, Maggie finds herself entangled in the world of illegal art dealing, putting her life on the line in an effort to help solve the crime and find justice.
The role of Maggie was written especially for Mirren who, while still playing an investigator, wears a character quite different than the one she previously portrayed as Prime Suspect's Inspector Tennison.
If you enjoyed Prime Suspect and are a fan of Helen Mirren, you will much appreciate the Painted Lady.
