Monsters University (2013) ****

While Monsters University may be viewed as yet another formulaic coming-of-age tale, albeit its monstrous proportions, this prequel to Monsters, Inc. plays along a finer motive than plain self-discovery. The film presents a young and ambitious Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal), who finds himself in rivalry with a privileged young Sulley (John Goodman,) entitled by name and appearance. Knowing that the two will end up as future best friends, adds a nice layer of curiosity to the plot. Unlike most animated films of this genre, Mike and Sully do not lack courage or conviction, but rather a clear understanding of their place in the world, a place decided by their individual characters. The film's conclusion is not so much about sticking to the goal even if you are not cut for the role, but rather that if you open your mind to possibilities, there's more than one way to get to where you want to go.
All in all Monsters University still manages to surprise and show originality. It is heartwarming, smart by fine nuances rather than wisecracks, energetic and fun. There are several brief parts where the film's pace is uneven in a manner that hurts its flow, but overall, I wholeheartedly recommend it as yet another excellent Pixar production. It is encouraging to see Pixar, quite consistently, keeping the bar raised at the face of so many underdeveloped animated movies that pack a few laughs but very little substance.
