Spring Breakers (2013) *

Spring Breakers is as hollow and shallow as the hedonistic culture it tries to portray. Written and directed by Harmony Korine, and starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine and Gucci Mane, this film follows four college-aged girls, tired of their boring existence, who decide to rob a fast food restaurant in order to pay for their spring break. They then take a bus to Florida, where they end up connecting with a drug dealer rapper (James Franco,) further continuing their journey downhill. The first thirty minutes of the film are composes of drugs, boobs and lots of drinking. If one was to condense the plot-related action of the first half of the film, it can be told in less than 10 min. I cannot share with you the second half of the film, as at that point I felt like I had seen enough and left the movie theater.
One point for the attention of Mr. Harmony Korine – if you want the audience to care about your story even a touch, why not make at least one of the characters someone we would care about? Just a thought.
