Mud (2013) ****

Mud (2013) ****

Set to the backdrop of crime, and being an engaging thriller, Mud is first and foremost a coming-of-age story about a boy trying to come into terms with what love is. Jeff Nichols who wrote and directed this film, manages to intertwine several different relationship plotlines into one whole story, and does so in a manner that feels natural.

The Intouchables (France, 2011) *****

The Intouchables (France, 2011) *****

The Intouchables tells the story of a very wealthy quadriplegic named Philippe, wonderfully played by François Cluzet, who hires an unlikely live-in caregiver, a simple street guy with some criminal background, named Driss (superbly performed by Omar Sy). As the story develops, the two characters, who are as different as any two people can be, develop a very sincere friendship and end up inspiring each other while stealing the hearts of the film's audience.

Iron Man 3 (2013) ***

Iron Man 3 (2013) ***

An early installment to this summer's blockbusters, Iron Man 3 delivers plenty of action, even if not much substance. This sequel to Iron Man 2, directed by Shane Black to a screenplay he co-wrote with Drew Pearce, makes some attempts at a changed Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, but fails with creating believable motivation for the film’s villain.

42 (2013) ***

42 (2013) ***

Being that 42 is the inspirational story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, one would have expected the filmmaking to show some more courage and daring. Instead, watching 42 feels much like watching a Disney flick; despite some intense racial moments, it's all very sterilized to fit all audiences. Nevertheless, 42 remains a notable film because of its subject matter; a film I will likely show my kids as a lesson in history, equality and tolerance.

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) ***

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) ***

All in all The Place Beyond the Pines is highly uneven; it enjoys some superbly powerful moments and engaging pieces of acting, but the parts in between, as well as the inconsistent theme, make this film mediocre.

Get Low may be a somewhat small story, but it carries a deeper grain of truth about forgiveness and how it first and foremost must start with oneself.
